US-led coalition ends Iraq mission, troops to leave most bases
The coalition was created to fight Islamic State, and the US and Iraq agreed in 2024 to wind down the mission as forces withdrew from bases nationwide.
A US-led coalition that deployed to Iraq more than a decade ago to fight jihadists has concluded its mission, with US troops withdrawing from bases across the country, according to Agence France-Presse via SCMP Economy.
The coalition originally moved into Iraq and Syria in 2014 to battle Islamic State, which seized large areas and carried out massacres, and it later helped defeat the group in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria in 2019 before remaining to fight remnants.
While Iraqi leaders have celebrated the decision, some fears remain that the withdrawal could embolden pro-Iran armed factions.
The US and Iraq agreed in 2024 to wind down the coalition’s mission, and the drawdown included restricting the remaining coalition presence to the autonomous northern Kurdistan region.
