Wearables are positioned to improve workplace safety and workers’ comp

At National Comp 2026 in Las Vegas, an expert panel on Sept. 29 discussed how workplace wearables can support hazard detection and ergonomic insights as employers modernize workers’ compensation risk management, according to Risk & Insurance.

The panel highlighted that workplace injuries tied to manual material handling, repetitive motion, and cumulative trauma remain among the most costly and persistent employer challenges, often leading to strains, sprains, and musculoskeletal disorders that produce lost time and mounting claims costs.

Risk & Insurance reports that speakers said traditional safety measures, such as inspections, audits, signage, and barricades, can only go so far because human error and the difficulty of monitoring every task in real time can leave gaps that enable preventable injuries.

The outlet also noted that wearables are increasingly paired with artificial intelligence, while emphasizing that employers must consider privacy concerns, secure employee buy-in, and define how the tools should fit into decision-making.
