Dutch spy agency warns smart cars can be used to spy
The General Intelligence and Security Service urged drivers to watch for espionage risks, including microphones that could be switched on remotely to listen.
The Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service, AIVD, warned that modern cars’ digital systems can collect data and connect to the internet, creating opportunities for hostile states to spy on drivers.
The agency highlighted that built-in features such as cameras, microphones, and GPS trackers could be accessed for surveillance, and said microphones can be switched on remotely to listen to conversations.
AIVD issued the warning in a translated document released on Wednesday, adding to broader concerns tied to a recent boom in Chinese car imports into the UK.
The agency did not name a specific country, but it called for greater awareness of espionage risks around modern vehicles.
