Emails show Rent Guidelines Board communications ahead of NYC rent freeze
The communications were filed in court on the same day rents were frozen on more than 1 million New York City apartments, according to Bisnow.
The Rent Guidelines Board leadership repeatedly communicated with Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s office in the months before June’s vote on a rent freeze for New York City’s stabilized apartments, according to texts and emails filed as evidence in court, Bisnow reported.
The documents included a draft of the Rent Guidelines Board’s explanatory statement sent June 16 by RGB Chair Chantella Mitchell to a deputy chief of staff tied to the deputy mayor for housing Arvind Sindhwani, more than a week before the official vote.
Bisnow said the initial batch of produced communications was filed in court on the same day that rents were frozen on more than 1 million NYC apartments.
Landlords have challenged the unprecedented 0% increase for one- and two-year leases, arguing the board’s process was illegally influenced by the mayor, while the mayor’s spokesperson said such communication is standard for the RGB.
