Eurozone September inflation rises on surging energy prices
Headline CPI increased to 3.8% year over year, while euro area core inflation stayed at 2.5%.
Eurozone preliminary consumer prices rose in September, with headline inflation accelerating to 3.8% year over year, versus 3.6% expected and up from 3.2% in August, according to Forexlive.
The report attributed most of the jump to energy prices, which increased 18.8% in September compared with a 14.3% rise the month before. It also noted gains in food, alcohol and tobacco inflation, and an increase in services inflation.
Core inflation held at 2.5% year over year, matching expectations, after services inflation picked up to 3.2% in September from 3.0% in August. Forexlive said the print supports the view that the European Central Bank cannot yet assume inflation is fully under control.
