Markets brace for Wednesday’s CPI report amid Fed hike debate

Redfin News says recent Fed speaker comments and the September FOMC minutes pointed to more hikes, but not necessarily immediately, while consumer inflation expectations rose alongside higher energy prices.

Redfin News said Wednesday’s CPI inflation report is expected to influence rates because each inflation print can move expectations for how many more Federal Reserve hikes are left. The outlet noted that rates fell slightly last week after Fed speakers reiterated that additional hikes are coming, though not necessarily right away.

According to Redfin News, the September FOMC minutes showed the vote to hike was unanimous, but members had differing rationales, including risk management and concern that inflation could broaden out. Redfin News added that another October hike is viewed as less likely unless the next CPI data significantly exceeds expectations.

Redfin News also pointed to rising inflation expectations from consumers, citing the New York Fed’s Survey of Consumer Expectations and the University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment survey. The outlet said the increases appear tied mostly to recent higher energy prices, and it warned that if expectations remain elevated, the Fed could treat it as a reason for further hikes.

Redfin News said a December hike remains on the table unless upcoming data changes the outlook on inflation and the risk of expectations becoming unanchored. The outlet’s setup framed the week’s key market focus as how the CPI release will shape the Fed path going forward.
