Fed officials could pause rate hikes before inflation hits 2%

October 7 minutes described the September decision to raise the main interest rate to 3.75%-4% and said participants did not agree on clear conditions to rule out more tightening.

The Federal Reserve can stop raising rates before inflation reaches its 2% target if officials conclude the economy is already on track to meet that level without further increases, according to CryptoSlate.

CryptoSlate reports that September’s meeting left many participants unconvinced, citing strong spending and persistent price increases that, in their view, outweighed concerns about strain in parts of the economy from costly borrowing.

In minutes released October 7, the outlet says the Fed’s unanimous decision to lift its main interest rate to 3.75%-4% was supported by differing rationales, with some expecting additional hikes by year end and others arguing higher rates were needed based on economic conditions.

CryptoSlate adds that the minutes reflect a debate over what could stop further moves, including whether temporary price pressures are fading versus whether spending remains too strong, while noting officials did not settle on specific conditions that would eliminate the possibility of another hike.
