HDFC Bank CEO-MD appointment spotlights impact on Nifty, Sensex
HDFC Bank carries about 11% to 13% weightage in Nifty 50 and roughly 12.5% in BSE Sensex, while its Bank Nifty weight is about 26% to 29% depending on market cap and exchange caps.
HDFC Bank’s new Managing Director and CEO, Anup Bagchi, has been approved by India’s central bank, the RBI, with Bagchi taking charge on October 27, 2026 for a three-year tenure, LiveMint Markets reports.
The appointment comes after leadership uncertainty following Sashidhar Jagdishan’s announced departure in late August, and it aims to help the bank navigate complex post merger integration, according to the report.
Market analysts cited by LiveMint Markets note the bank’s large index influence, with HDFC Bank shares weighting about 11% to 13% in the Nifty 50 index and around 12.5% in the BSE Sensex.
The same experts point to HDFC Bank’s weight in Bank Nifty, which ranges from 26% to 29% depending on market cap and exchange regulatory caps, raising the question of how the CEO change could affect the key benchmarks Sensex, Nifty 50 and Bank Nifty.
