Hong Kong raises minimum wage for foreign domestic helpers to HK$5,220

The increase to HK$5,220 per month, effective for contracts signed on or after Saturday, leaves the food allowance unchanged at at least HK$1,236.

Hong Kong authorities have raised the minimum wage for foreign domestic helpers by 2.35 percent to HK$5,220 (US$665) per month, with the adjusted pay applying to all such contracts signed on or after Saturday, according to SCMP Economy.

The government said the helpers’ food allowance will remain unchanged, with employers able to pay a food allowance instead of providing free food, at no less than HK$1,236 per month.

Officials said the latest review used the established mechanism and considered a basket of socio-economic factors, including Hong Kong’s general economic performance and labor market conditions over the past year, the near-term economic outlook, affordability for employers, and basic living needs of the workers.

A government spokesman said the increase reflected more favorable socio-economic factors identified in the review.
