Keynes petitioned to spend 20,000 pounds on an Edgar Degas auction
Guardian Economics recounts that John Maynard Keynes traveled across northern France in spring 1918, not on war business, but to attend an auction connected to Edgar Degas.
The outlet says Keynes returned to London with impressionist treasures for the National Gallery after successfully petitioning the chancellor of the exchequer to spend 20,000 pounds at the sale.
