Malaysia warns South China Sea tensions could spill into Sabah

Malaysia’s defence minister said Sabah is a key concern area, adding that Malaysia plans to strengthen national defence as a precaution.

Malaysia is watching South China Sea tensions more closely because officials fear an incident in the disputed waters could spill over into Malaysia, particularly its eastern state of Sabah, according to SCMP Economy.

The concern follows comments from Malaysian Defence Minister Khaled Nordin, who said Malaysia faces challenges tied to South China Sea rivalries between major powers and that even a geographically small area could affect the country.

Nordin also said Malaysia is looking to strengthen its national defence as a precautionary measure, with local media quoting him as warning about the risk of a conflict or unexpected incident impacting Malaysia.

SCMP Economy reported that observers linked the remarks to Sabah’s proximity to a potential flashpoint involving Philippine territory.
