Meta says Muse AI cannot read Messages without opt-in permissions

Meta’s communications chief says Muse on Mac requires both Full Disk Access and the Messages connector, and each can be revoked at any time.

Meta disputed a recent report that its Muse AI agent accessed iMessages without permission, saying the Messages integration on Mac is entirely opt-in. Decrypt reports Meta communications chief Andy Stone said Muse cannot read a user’s Messages unless the user enables specific settings.

Stone said two switches must be turned on for Muse to access Messages content. One is Apple’s Full Disk Access, and the other is Muse’s own Messages connector, and both can be revoked at any time, according to Decrypt.

Meta was responding to an account by a tech journalist who said Muse synced his texts despite his permission settings. Decrypt notes Stone was answering AppleInsider’s report on Inc. columnist Jason Aten’s experience, in which the AI uploaded his texts to its cloud.

Meta launched Muse on Sept. 8, and it had surpassed 2 in Decrypt’s account of Meta’s launch progress, though the specific figure is truncated in the provided text. Decrypt’s article frames the clarification as a record set straight after the earlier reporter’s account.
