Nasdaq reaches record high after US hiring added only 29,000 jobs

September payroll growth came in far below expectations at 29,000 jobs, keeping Fed rate hike odds low and pulling US bond yields down.

US markets rose after a weaker-than-expected US jobs report, with the Nasdaq Composite pushing to an all-time high as traders reassessed expectations for Federal Reserve rate moves.

The report said the US added only 29,000 jobs in September, and commentary in the coverage described wage growth as more anaemic than expected.

In Europe, the same news stream highlighted that eurozone inflation ticked higher, with core inflation excluding energy, food, alcohol and tobacco rising to 2.5% in September from 2.4% in August, while overall inflation jumped to 3.8%.
