OpenAI fires three safety researchers over alleged sensitive info leak

OpenAI said the researchers violated its policies on accessing and handling sensitive information, but did not specify what was shared or with whom.

OpenAI has parted ways with three safety researchers who allegedly shared confidential company information with an outside AI safety organization, the Wall Street Journal reported, according to Decrypt. OpenAI said the three violated company policies related to accessing and handling sensitive information.

Decrypt notes that OpenAI has not detailed what information changed hands, which organization received it, or who the researchers were. The lack of specifics has led to speculation online, including social media accounts that track departures from AI labs.

The report also references a broader context of turnover in the safety field, including months of “rogue-agent” incidents and a trail of safety-team departures.

Decrypt further points to earlier leadership disruption, saying OpenAI’s board fired CEO Sam Altman in November 2023, and he was reinstated days later, while co-founder Ilya Sutskever and researcher Jan Leike had left by May 2024, with their superalignment team later dissolved.
