Thames Water apologises after £145,000 billing error

The utility said the funds were returned to the customer’s account and offered a goodwill gesture after a meter reading mistake triggered the debit.

Thames Water has apologised to a customer after attempting to take more than £145,000 from his bank account due to a meter reading error, according to BBC Business.

The customer, identified in the report as Adam Bainbridge, a teacher from north London, discovered on Thursday morning that Thames had debited £145,562, and his wife said he had trouble paying bills that day.

BBC Business reports that Thames Water said it returned the money to Bainbridge’s account and apologised to him personally.

The outlet added that the company offered a gesture of goodwill, and that Bainbridge initially had trouble reaching staff, only speaking to a Thames chatbot before the issue was corrected.
