Petra Diamonds considers sale amid liquidity squeeze

Petra said the strategic review will consider all available options to strengthen its financial position, after shares fell nearly 20% to 5.4p and its Finsch mine entered business rescue in May.

Petra Diamonds is weighing a potential sale as it launches a strategic review aimed at easing liquidity pressures tied to a prolonged downturn in the diamond market, Mining.com reported. The Africa-focused miner said the review will consider all available options to strengthen its financial position.

The company also said shares dropped almost 20% on the news to 5.4p each, leaving Petra with a market value of £19.1 million, or $25.2 million. It added that the diamond-market weakness has been compounded by operational challenges at its Finsch mine in South Africa.

Petra linked the funding stress to weak natural diamond prices and rising competition from lab-grown stones, which it said strained producers across the sector. The miner noted that diamond producers have responded by cutting costs, curbing production, and reconsidering corporate structures.

Petra further announced that chair José Manuel Vargas stepped down, with insider Lerato Molebatsi taking over on an interim basis. Vargas’ exit follows his oversight of Petra through its 2025 refinancing, and the company pointed to Finsch entering business rescue in May as another sign of financial pressure.
