UK faces sanctions risk over decision on Rosebank oil field
Campaigners say Rosebank links to an Israeli firm listed by the UN in connection with settlement support, prompting renewed scrutiny as a decision approaches.
The UK prime minister has been warned that approving the Rosebank oil field could breach the government’s own sanctions targeting illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, according to BBC Business.
The government is due to make a long-awaited decision on whether to proceed with Rosebank, described as Britain’s largest untapped oil field off Shetland, and campaigners have raised concerns about its ties to Delek Group.
Environmental campaigners and Green Party leader Zack Polanski have separately written to Andy Burnham and the foreign secretary, arguing that Delek Group was last year included in a UN database of firms alleged to provide services or utilities supporting settlements in occupied Palestinian territories.
A Delek Group spokesman told the Daily Telegraph that the company has no involvement in Israeli settlements and said it was wrongly included in the database, while Uplift and other groups have helped organize letters urging further review as the exploration decision remains delayed.
