Unfixed Eclair Lightning nodes may crash on restart without on-chain BTC

The issue impacts reachable Eclair Lightning nodes running v0.14.0 and earlier, and fixes were previously shipped in v0.14.1 and later v0.14.3, according to CryptoSlate.

A newly disclosed Bitcoin Lightning vulnerability could cause Eclair nodes to crash repeatedly on restart without an attacker spending BTC on-chain, CryptoSlate reports. The flaw is tied to “unfunded channels” and was observed in reachable nodes running v0.14.0 and earlier.

Crypto research published Sept. 30 described how saved channel records can overwhelm older nodes after a reboot, leaving restart alone insufficient to restore service. The finding was discussed alongside a separate denial-of-service bug in an Oct. 1 developer post, the outlet said.

Both issues were addressed in Eclair v0.14.1, which was released in July, CryptoSlate reports. ACINQ later recommended upgrading to the v0.14.3 security release for additional, separate vulnerabilities.

CryptoSlate added that Eclair’s handling of pending channels could be undermined when it inconsistently checked temporary and final channel identifiers, letting a malicious peer accumulate saved requests without broadcasting the funding transaction or paying an on-chain fee. The outlet said the attack still required computing resources and network traffic, with the proof of concept running Eclair v0.14.0.
