US charges California man in alleged $300 million AI server smuggling plot
Prosecutors allege he used Malaysia and Singapore as transit points and used false documents to conceal China as the final destination.
South China Morning Post reports that US authorities arrested a California technology company owner accused of smuggling more than US$300 million worth of restricted computer servers to China in a plot tied to artificial intelligence hardware.
According to the US Justice Department, the suspect, Greg Lui, 38, also known as Yiu Kong Lui, was charged with conspiracy to violate US export controls, outbound smuggling, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
The case alleges he routed shipments through Malaysia and Singapore to circumvent US export laws and conceal China as the true destination, including through the use of false documents and transshipment schemes.
US Justice Department national security officials said the indictment describes efforts to evade export controls for restricted AI technology.
