US export licensing slowdown could further delay China’s C919
Analysts say alternative suppliers for key C919 components are not readily available, and the US measure aims to prevent Comac from stockpiling parts.
A reported US move to restrict exports of aircraft parts to China would add another production hurdle for the C919, a Chinese passenger jet developed by Comac to compete with Airbus and Boeing, analysts said. The concern is that alternative sources for critical components are not readily available, according to those analysts, as China’s program faces further delivery delays.
HousingWire reports that the US Commerce Department has slowed export licensing for civilian airplane parts to China in recent weeks, a step intended to strengthen Washington’s position in trade talks with Beijing. The change is also described as aimed at preventing Comac from stockpiling parts, Reuters reported, citing unnamed sources.
Reuters also said US officials have reportedly expressed interest in regulations that would make it easier to restrict shipments of aviation hydraulic fluid, which could affect supplies tied to aircraft production. The developments point to a tightening of aviation-related export controls as trade negotiations continue.
