US sanctions Russia-linked A7 crypto payment network
Treasury said A7 sub-agents processed more than $17 billion in dollar-denominated transactions from January 2025 to June 2026.
The US sanctioned the Russia-linked A7 Network and proposed new restrictions aimed at disconnecting its crypto intermediaries from global markets, according to CryptoSlate. On Oct. 1, the Treasury Department designated A7 as a significant transnational criminal organization.
The designation expands blocking sanctions to the broader payment network, while FinCEN separately proposed barring covered financial institutions from transmitting funds involving identified A7 sub-agents. The Treasury said the shadow-payment system has helped Russian sanctioned entities, Iran’s central bank, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and other illicit actors move money through companies designed to make restricted transfers look like ordinary commercial payments.
CryptoSlate reported that FinCEN said A7 sub-agents handled more than $17 billion in dollar-denominated transactions between January 2025 and June 2026. Treasury also said the network claimed in January it was managing more than 2,000 transactions per day with an equivalent value of $91.5 billion, about 13% of Russia’s 2025 foreign trade.
