USD/JPY slides below 158 as Tokyo CPI boosts yen

Tokyo consumer inflation accelerated in September, and BoJ policymakers debated further rate hikes, adding support for the yen even as US data expectations kept USD bid.

The USD/JPY pair eased during the Asian session on Friday, trading below 158.00 while staying near the weekly high set the prior day, according to FXStreet.

FXStreet cited faster Tokyo consumer inflation in September, along with signals from the Bank of Japan that policymakers discussed the need for additional rate hikes to adjust accommodative financial conditions, as factors supporting the Japanese yen.

The outlet also pointed to market speculation that Japanese authorities may intervene again to strengthen the yen, which has weighed on USD/JPY.

On the other side, FXStreet said bullish sentiment around the US dollar remains intact as bets for an October Federal Reserve rate hike continue to recede, while inflation concerns tied to volatile energy prices help keep US bond yields supported and the safe-haven dollar near its highest level since March 2025.
