Chinese naval hospital ship makes first visit to Senegal

In Senegal, the Auspicious Ark arrived in Dakar for the first Chinese naval hospital ship visit to the country, following a seven day stop in Mauritania.

SCMP Economy reports that the Chinese PLA Navy hospital ship Auspicious Ark entered Dakar, Senegal on September 25, with Senegalese residents and members of the Chinese community waiting at the port. The outlet notes that the ship’s arrival looked more like a public health mission than a naval deployment, and said it was the first visit by a Chinese naval hospital ship to Senegal.

Before reaching Senegal, the Auspicious Ark visited Mauritania, where SCMP Economy reports a woman with a high risk pregnancy sought help and gave birth aboard the vessel. During its stops, the ship also delivered medical services, including an ophthalmology team that completed its first cataract operation of the visit and handling more than 1,600 patient visits in a single day.
