Heathrow third runway expansion projected to deliver net loss
The analysis cited by the UK transport department forecasts the GDP boost would be far smaller than earlier claims, with the overall project costs outweighing benefits.
In a Guardian Business opinion piece, George Monbiot argues that building a third runway at Heathrow would be economically harmful, despite government claims that airport expansion supports growth.
The article says the project would cost between £23.4 billion and £62.5 billion, citing figures attributed to the UK Department for Transport.
It also claims earlier estimates of the runway adding to GDP were overstated, saying the Department for Transport analysis concluded the real increase would be between 0.03% and 0.05%, compared with a 0.43% figure attributed to a report commissioned by the airport.
The piece further states that the transport department’s analysis weighed social and environmental impacts and found the third runway would produce a massive net loss.
