Malaysia repatriates nearly 1,500 Myanmar nationals amid UN return warnings
Malaysia said 10,388 Myanmar nationals were being held in immigration detention centers, with about 5,000 slated for return in stages.
Malaysia repatriated nearly 1,500 Myanmar nationals to Yangon on Sunday, despite warnings from the UN refugee agency and rights groups that conditions for return remain unsafe, according to SCMP Economy citing Associated Press reporting.
The returnees include 86 women and were sent back after being convicted in Malaysia of staying illegally and other immigration violations, the report said. They were transported from Malaysia last Tuesday aboard two navy warships and a hospital ship, and arrived in southern Yangon in the early hours of Sunday, a regional government minister said.
The repatriations are part of broader plans for staged returns, with the report saying that about 5,000 Myanmar nationals will be repatriated from Malaysia. Malaysia’s Home Ministry also indicated that 10,388 other Myanmar nationals were being held in immigration detention centers.
