RBI MPC set for Oct 5-7 as repo rate hike odds rise
The RBI has held the repo rate at 5.25% for four straight policy meetings, and economists expect a first hike since February 2023 if inflation and global rate pressures persist.
The Reserve Bank of India’s six-member Monetary Policy Committee will meet from October 5 to 7 to review economic conditions and decide on the next monetary policy step, with the decision scheduled for October 7.
LiveMint Markets reports the RBI kept the repo rate unchanged at 5.25% for the last four consecutive policy meetings, after cutting it by a cumulative 125 basis points in 2025.
Ahead of the October meeting, expectations have shifted toward a tighter stance as rising inflation, higher energy prices, and rate hikes by several major global central banks have strengthened the case for an increase.
Economists cited by LiveMint Markets expect the RBI could consider a 25 basis point hike, taking the repo rate to 5.50%, which would be the central bank’s first increase since February 2023.
