Russia’s Finance Ministry begins paying some employees in digital rubles
The digital-ruble wage option started Thursday, Oct. 1, and follows 2025 federal budget trials that disbursed about 16 million digital rubles, according to the Ministry of Finance.
Cointelegraph reports that Russia’s Ministry of Finance said some of its employees received wages in digital rubles for the first time.
The ministry said the work to introduce the digital ruble into the budget process is being carried out by the Bank of Russia together with the Finance Ministry.
According to the ministry, the option for citizens to be paid in the central bank’s digital currency is voluntary, and it began on Thursday, Oct. 1.
The ministry did not disclose how many employees took part or the total payroll amount, but Cointelegraph notes that during federal budget spending trials in 2025, about 16 million digital rubles, or $192,245, were disbursed.
