Conservative hopeful pledges tax cuts including possible mansion tax repeal

He also said he would scrap the High Value Council Tax Surcharge, due to start in 2028 for homes in England worth over £2 million.

BBC Business reports that Shadow chancellor Andrew Griffith said he wants to scrap at least one tax in every Conservative budget if the party returns to power, citing the so-called mansion tax as a target.

Speaking at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, Griffith framed his approach around lower, simpler, and fairer taxes, adding that any cuts would be carried out only when the government can afford them.

He said he would scrap the High Value Council Tax Surcharge, known as HVCTS, which is set to take effect in 2028 and would add an extra levy for owners of properties in England valued above £2 million.

The outlet also notes that Labour criticized the record of the previous Conservative government, while the Conservatives have said their “golden economic rule” would direct at least half of identified savings toward deficit reduction.
