CFTC proposes federal framework for crypto exchange oversight
The proposal would let U.S. crypto exchanges opt into a federal regulatory regime as the CFTC and SEC continue advancing digital asset rulemaking.
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission has proposed new rules to regulate digital asset transactions and markets, creating a federal oversight framework for cryptocurrency exchanges. Bitcoin Magazine says the agency issued the proposal in a Monday release, describing it as an option for exchanges to opt into the regime.
The story notes that lawmakers blocked the Clarity Act last month, but the CFTC and Securities and Exchange Commission have still moved forward with proposing rules to regulate the digital asset industry.
Bitcoin Magazine reports that CFTC Chair Mike Selig called the proposal a critical step toward keeping the U.S. a leading hub for crypto and said the action is just the beginning of the agency’s efforts.
