Dodik declares victory as Bosnia election vote count nears 90%
With nearly 90% of votes counted, Dodik ally Zeljka Cvijanovic led with over 55% of votes for one of three presidency seats.
Bosnian Serb nationalist politician Milorad Dodik declared victory for his party in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s election on Sunday, with the vote shaped by economic pressures, the prospect of EU membership and ongoing ethnic tensions since the 1992 to 1995 war.
The Associated Press reports that Dodik, a pro-Russia figure, dominated the campaign despite not appearing on the ballot, using separatist rhetoric that has raised fears of renewed instability.
Formerly president of the Serb-majority entity Republika Srpska, Dodik was banned from holding public office after being convicted last year of defying decisions by the international envoy overseeing the 1995 peace agreement that ended the war.
With nearly 90% of votes counted, Dodik ally Zeljka Cvijanovic of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats had more than 55% of votes to win one of the three seats in Bosnia’s tripartite presidency, leading her nearest opponent by around 30 percentage points.
