Gen Z and millennials cite financial anxiety and distrust in homebuying

A National MI and FirstHome IQ survey found nearly 90% of respondents feel shame about their finances.

HousingWire reports that a National MI and FirstHome IQ study found Gen Z and millennials often face emotional and informational barriers to buying a home, even when they are financially qualified.

The report says financial anxiety, shame, distrust, and information overload are widespread, and that many still view homeownership as financial security.

The study, titled “How You’re Built to Buy: A NextGen Homebuyer Report,” was led by Kristin Messerli, executive director of FirstHome IQ, and is part of the NextGen Homebuyer research series run with National MI.

HousingWire adds that the research emphasizes attitudes beyond traditional readiness measures like savings, credit, and income, and it urges housing professionals to build trust, simplify information, and challenge common misconceptions such as needing 20% down.
