Russia downplays plague death reports from Siberia lab

The case drew alarm after Friday reports tied the suspected infection to possible lab mishandling and a postmortem finding of no plague detected.

Russia downplayed reports of a plague death involving a laboratory technician in Siberia, saying postmortem tests had not detected plague. Moscow said Washington was closely monitoring the situation.

The reported death began after Friday coverage that said a 28-year-old woman, identified as Darya Shipilova, died of plague while working at an anti-plague institute in Siberia’s Irkutsk region.

One outlet, People of Baikal, cited unnamed sources close to regional security services, saying she may have contracted pneumonic plague from a broken test tube, while other media reported a possible connection to a lab accident at the facility.
