Labour pledges new independent leasehold regulator and fee caps

Angela Rayner said legislation to ban new leasehold properties is expected before the next election, but would not take effect until after.

Guardian Business reports that Labour is promising steps aimed at “trapped leaseholders,” including plans to legislate for a new independent regulator and to launch a consultation on capping what it calls “rip off” administrative fees.

The outlet says housing secretary Angela Rayner noted that a ban on new leasehold properties is expected before the next election, though it is unlikely to come into force until after.

Guardian Business also highlights remarks from Andy Burnham to the Labour party conference, where he said leaseholders would no longer be squeezed for every penny, and that ministers should give homeowners more power over costs rather than leaving them with complaints alone.
