North Sea oil strike threat raises concerns for UK fuel supplies

Unite said Apache set deadlines on a deal for back pay and could withhold payments, while Apache pointed to a 4% pay increase offer.

A looming strike by North Sea oil workers could severely disrupt UK fuel supplies, according to the Unite union.

Unite said staff felt they had no choice but take industrial action after pay talks with the Texas oil firm Apache broke down. The union said Apache workers backed strike action, arguing an offer would amount to a real-terms pay cut for many employees amid what Unite characterized as high company profits.

Unite also said the operator set deadlines for reaching agreement on back pay and indicated payments could be withheld, potentially leaving workers thousands of pounds out of pocket.

Apache said it engaged constructively throughout the pay discussions and said it offered a 4% pay increase for staff.
