Purpose-built student accommodation providers face financial trouble
The collapse of high-end student housing providers has forced students to scramble for replacements, including one paying £850 to move belongings for the new academic year.
A string of purpose-built student accommodation providers, aimed at more affluent students, has run into financial difficulty, leaving some students in urgent search of new housing, The Guardian reports. One student described how she discovered her studio flat owner in Scotland had abruptly gone bust while she was in Thailand.
Nathalie Sriwiboonrattan, a fourth-year game design student at Abertay University, said the situation was especially difficult because she was not in the country and felt she had limited options. She was forced to secure new housing for the academic year that has just begun and paid £850 to have her possessions moved.
The article links the disruptions to a broader student housing crisis, citing pressures from the cost of living crisis and a drop in international students, which has reduced demand for purpose-built accommodation.
