Quebec separatists seek power as election tests PM Mark Carney’s unity message
The Parti Quebecois is running after 12 years in opposition, with voter support linked to affordability concerns and protecting the French language.
Quebec’s separatist Parti Quebecois eyed a return to power on Monday in a provincial election that could test Prime Minister Mark Carney’s message of national unity as Canada faces pressure connected to the United States, including the context of President Donald Trump’s trade war.
The outlet said Carney is popular in Quebec, and that a PQ rise is not viewed as a rejection of his stance toward Trump, but instead reflects broader frustration with affordability and a continued push to protect the French language in a more anglophone country.
A PQ voter in Montreal, Francis Chalifour, a 49-year-old teacher, said he wants Quebec to still be speaking French in 100 years after casting his ballot.
