Ex-CIA official pleads guilty over $40 million gold and Florida property

Prosecutors said the scheme led to about $194 million in total federal losses, according to the Justice Department.

A former senior CIA official, David J. Rush, pleaded guilty in Virginia to abusing his position and government funds to enrich himself through luxury real estate in south Florida and hundreds of gold bars worth more than US$40 million, court records show, according to SCMP Economy.

A court filing said Rush fabricated a highly classified government program to justify buying the luxury property he intended to resell for personal profit, and separately created a bogus sensitive government activity to obtain the gold bars.

The filing also said the fraudulent conduct caused around US$194 million in total losses to the federal government, according to the Justice Department, as reported by SCMP Economy.
