Mistral AI launches Mistral Large 4 with 1 trillion parameters
Paris-based Mistral AI launched Mistral Large 4 on Tuesday, describing it as a model with 1 trillion parameters, the type of system used behind major chatbot products.
The company said Large 4 is built using a mixture of experts approach, so only 49 billion parameters are active per answer, compared with 41 billion active parameters in its prior Large 3 model.
Mistral AI’s chief scientist Guillaume Lample said on X that Large 4 is at the frontier of open models and is the strongest open weight option from the US or Europe, according to Decrypt.
The model also follows a naming controversy tied to an internet meme, Decrypt notes, after Mistral renamed its Le Chat assistant to Vibe and fans created the fictional “Le Chaton Fat” nickname.
