Rubio calls Iceland a key security outpost amid Arctic push
Rubio’s visit follows a late September US security pact with Denmark and Greenland that would allow Washington to set up two new military bases there.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Iceland has long been a “critical outpost” for security, speaking during a visit to the island as the United States seeks greater influence in the Arctic, according to SCMP Economy.
Rubio linked the trip to shifting regional dynamics after US President Donald Trump stirred up the power balance by making threats to buy or annex Greenland.
The visit also comes after the United States signed a security pact with Denmark and Greenland in late September that would allow Washington to establish two new military bases there, according to SCMP Economy.
At a news conference, Rubio said Iceland has served as a key location for monitoring clandestine activity and deterring US adversaries.
