Saudi resumes Yemen strikes, raising Iran conflict risk
Saudi Arabia restarted major air strikes after a four-year lull, with more than 100 warplanes hitting Houthi positions on Monday.
Iran and Saudi Arabia are edging toward direct conflict, analysts warn, after Riyadh resumed major air strikes on Yemen’s Tehran-allied Houthi rebels this week, ending a four-year lull.
According to SCMP Economy, more than 100 Saudi warplanes bombed rebel positions on Monday, enabling Yemeni government forces to retake much of Red Sea coastal territory the Houthis seized last month.
The outlet reports the Houthis had been aided by embedded Iranian military advisers, and analysts expect the group to retaliate with intensified drone and ballistic missile attacks against Saudi Arabia.
SCMP Economy also says Iran’s Revolutionary Guards are expected to supply weapons and targeting intelligence to the Houthis, with the risk that casualties rise as the conflict widens and draws in more international players.
