Thematic ETF launches surge, with nearly 100 added since Q1 end
Strategas Asset Management’s Todd Sohn said the thematic ETF boom is driven by issuers targeting AI-linked exposure alongside a more tech-heavy S&P 500.
ETF Trends reports that the thematic ETF segment has accelerated sharply in 2026, with new launches running at nearly 100 since the end of Q1 alone.
The outlet attributed the surge to issuers seeking to offer exposures tied to an AI-centric investment theme, according to Strategas Asset Management Chief ETF Strategist Todd Sohn.
ETF Trends also noted that Sohn characterized the ETF cascade as both a response to investor demand for AI-focused strategies and a complement to the increasingly tech-heavy core S&P 500 index.
The article cautioned that while many new thematic funds may eventually close or merge, the absolute number that survive could still be higher a few years out.
