Charities warn UK could lose credibility after aid budget cut pledge

The plan would also prevent the UK from meeting existing contributions to the UN and World Bank, charities told the Guardian.

Charities and multiple organizations told the Guardian that Conservative plans to slash the UK aid budget would “irreparably damage” Britain’s global credibility.

According to the outlet, at the Tory party conference in Birmingham, Kemi Badenoch said that if prime minister she would cut aid spending from £9bn a year to £1bn, with the money intended to help fund 50,000 new prison places in England and Wales.

The Guardian reports that charities also said the proposed cut by 90% would leave the UK unable to cover its existing contributions to the UN and World Bank.

The same reporting states that the culture budget would also be reduced by £1bn a year to help pay for the prison-related plans.
