Trump says he will fund TV ads after criticism of taxpayer use
The White House and Trump had defended the three nationally broadcast spots as patriotic public service announcements, but lawmakers questioned whether public funds were used to promote him.
US President Donald Trump said Monday that he would pay for television advertisements himself or with money raised from the MAGA political committee after pushback over the use of taxpayer-funded TV ads featuring him ahead of the November congressional elections, according to Reuters.
Ethics experts and lawmakers from both parties criticized three nationally broadcast ads that celebrate a “golden age of America,” with lawmakers questioning whether public funds were being used for political promotion.
Reuters reports that critics also argued the spots may breach long-standing restrictions on government propaganda and political activity, while the White House and Trump defended the ads as patriotic public service announcements similar to those run by previous presidents.
