BaFin rejects Bitcoin.de MiCA authorization, forcing outsourcing and overhaul
Trading has been largely suspended since June 12, though customers can still withdraw crypto and the euro deposits suspension remains in place.
BaFin rejected the MiCA authorization application from Futurum Bank AG, the operator behind Bitcoin.de, ending the regulator’s prior tolerance for the firm’s crypto services. The refusal prevents Futurum Bank from becoming an authorized crypto asset service provider under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets regime, according to CryptoSlate.
Bitcoin.de is rebuilding its operating model after regulators ruled against the application, with the platform forced to outsource trading and custody to outside partners. Trading on the platform has already been largely suspended since June 12, while customers can still withdraw crypto even as trading and euro deposits remain suspended.
The decision also means Futurum Bank will continue holding assets until they are transferred to a new custodian, while existing logins and customer claims remain unaffected. Bitcoin Group said Futurum Bank applied for MiCA authorization in June 2025, and the process stayed unresolved for more than 15 months.
After BaFin’s rejection, Bitcoin.de said it prepared an alternative structure to keep the platform running through two regulated German institutions, with one acting as the customers’ trading counterparty. The firm also said it plans to keep the platform operational using that setup as arrangements with regulated partners are completed.
