Bank of England picks Atlantic puffin and other wildlife for new notes
The Bank said the change replaces notable historical figures on cash, after a public vote drew nearly half a million ballots from a shortlist of 18 animals.
The Bank of England has selected four wildlife animals to feature on redesigned UK banknotes, including the Atlantic puffin, barn owl, buff-tailed bumblebee, and European hedgehog.
The Bank said the creatures were chosen after nearly half a million people voted following a shortlist of 18 animals proposed for the public nomination process, with the owl, bumblebee, and hedgehog leading their categories and the puffin added to highlight marine life and the coastline.
Wildlife will replace notable figures from history, such as Sir Winston Churchill, on the cash, a decision that the BBC noted angered some leading politicians.
The Bank said no decision has been made yet on which animal will be shown on which denomination, and that Victoria Cleland, the Bank's chief cashier, described the animals as enhancing both security and representation of UK wildlife.
