Bank of England unveils four wildlife animals for future banknotes

The choice follows a public vote of nearly 500,000 people from a shortlist of 18 creatures.

The Bank of England has revealed four wildlife animals that will appear on redesigned UK banknotes in the coming years, including the Atlantic puffin, barn owl, buff-tailed bumblebee, and European hedgehog, according to BBC Business.

The animals were selected after nearly half a million people voted on a shortlist of 18 creatures, with the owl, bumblebee, and hedgehog topping their respective categories, while the puffin was chosen to celebrate marine life and the coastline.

The Bank said wildlife will replace notable historical figures on cash, after the decision drew anger from some leading politicians.

Victoria Cleland, the Bank’s chief cashier, said the selected animals were chosen to showcase UK wildlife variety and enhance the security of banknotes, BBC Business reported.
