Bank of England picks native animals for next UK banknotes
The design upgrade will roll out on the next £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes, and the Bank said the updated imagery is intended to help deter counterfeiting.
The Bank of England has announced that the next generation of UK banknotes will feature four native species, selected after a large-scale public consultation. According to the Bank, the four animals were chosen as the theme of wild creatures, then members of the public voted on favorites out of 18 options split into three categories.
The buff-tailed bumblebee received the most votes in the insects, fish and amphibian group, the barn owl won the birds division, and the European hedgehog was named the top mammal. The Atlantic puffin was also added to celebrate Britain’s coastline, the Bank said.
The Bank of England said the upgraded imagery will be used on the next £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes. The Guardian reports the central bank described the update as an anti-counterfeit measure.
