Ethereum researcher warns of AI threat to crypto wallet security
Justin Drake said holders may need to move funds into fresh addresses with public keys never exposed after OpenAI released new math results.
OpenAI’s latest advances in mathematics have prompted Ethereum researcher Justin Drake to warn that crypto wallet security could face an unexpected AI-driven risk, CryptoSlate reports. In a post dated Oct. 7, Drake urged the industry to plan for what he called “bunker mode.”
Drake recommended a controlled migration of digital assets into new addresses whose public keys have never been exposed, including moving most holdings for large, sophisticated users to addresses that have never signed transactions. He also said remaining balances should be transferred into another fresh address after those new addresses are used to send funds.
Drake linked his warning to OpenAI’s Oct. 6 release of a broad collection of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model. OpenAI said it tested the model across thousands of problems, published proofs using computer-checkable Lean formalizations, and spent the equivalent of about three hours of ChatGPT Pro reasoning per average result, according to CryptoSlate.
The researcher’s central point was that the pace of AI mathematical discovery is accelerating, and that the crypto industry may need to revisit assumptions about how long current protections remain secure, based on the risk scenario he outlined.
