Hurricane Isaias forecast to intensify before Gulf Coast landfall

The National Hurricane Center forecasts storm surge of up to 7 feet along the Gulf Coast, from Ocean Springs, Mississippi to Indian Pass, Florida.

The US National Hurricane Center said the system known as Tropical Depression Nine is expected to become Tropical Storm Isaias later today, then intensify into a hurricane as it moves toward a Gulf Coast landfall, according to Artemis.

In an update at 09:00 UTC, the NHC reported maximum sustained winds near 40 mph, with rapid strengthening expected over the next day or two, and said Isaias is expected to become a hurricane by Thursday.

The latest advisory data cited by the NHC shows hurricane-force conditions with wind speeds around 90 to 95 knots, which would place it around Category 2, with potential sustained winds near 110 mph at the forecast peak.

The NHC also issued storm surge forecasts for as high as 7 feet between Ocean Springs, Mississippi and Indian Pass, Florida, including impacts near Mobile Bay, Alabama.
