Initial estimate puts Southern Ontario storm losses at C$563m
CatIQ said the initial figure covers property and motor claims, including additional loss adjustment expenses, with scope for the estimate to rise as more data arrives.
Canada’s insured loss and exposure indices provider CatIQ estimated that a severe storm outbreak that hit Southern Ontario, including Toronto, on September 2 and 3, 2026, will result in an initial insurance industry loss of C$563 million.
CatIQ said the estimate is preliminary, noting there is likely to be some upward creep in the coming weeks and months.
The loss estimate covers property damage across commercial and residential lines and vehicle, or motor, claims, including additional loss adjustment expenses.
CatIQ attributed the losses to hot and humid conditions that ended abruptly with severe storms in early September, producing very large hail, damaging wind gusts, and torrential rain, as well as multiple confirmed tornadoes and downbursts across the Windsor-to-Ottawa region.
